Teen Therapy — Grand Forks, ND

Teen therapy at Level Up MHC is different from generic talk therapy because we work with what often drives teen emotions and behavior underneath the surface: nervous system stress responses, regulation capacity, and the pressures teens are carrying in their bodies—not just their thoughts. When a teen’s system is stuck in overdrive or shutdown, insight alone rarely creates change.

We provide teen therapy in Grand Forks, ND for adolescents ages 12–18 with a trauma-informed, nervous system-centered approach that is structured, grounded, and built for real life.

When a teen is “fine” on the outside but struggling underneath

Teen stress doesn’t always look like sadness. It often looks like:

  • Irritability, anger, or quick escalation
  • Anxiety, panic sensations, or constant worry
  • Perfectionism, people-pleasing, or fear of disappointing others
  • Shutdown, numbness, withdrawal, or “I don’t care” responses
  • Mood swings, low motivation, or burnout
  • Conflict at home, school avoidance, or friendship stress
  • Trouble sleeping, headaches, stomachaches, or body tension
  • Risky behaviors, impulsivity, or coping through avoidance

These patterns are often nervous system-driven: a teen’s body is responding to threat, pressure, or unresolved stress—even when they can’t fully explain it.

Our approach: nervous system regulation + trauma-informed care

A lot of teen counseling focuses on “coping skills” and talking through problems. That can help. But many teens need something deeper: regulation support that helps their body come out of survival mode, so learning, connection, and confidence can rebuild.

Our clinical identity is nervous system-centered and trauma-informed. That means we focus on:

  • Regulation: helping the body recover after stress instead of staying activated
  • Capacity: building tolerance for emotions without flooding or shutting down
  • Integration: helping changes show up at home, school, and in relationships
  • Boundaries + structure: predictability matters for a dysregulated system

Our work is informed by advanced training in the Biology of Trauma® framework developed by Dr. Aimie Apigian. Dr. Apigian has personally trained our team, and our founder is Biology of Trauma® certified. As a practice, we’re building shared clinical language and consistency through ongoing training.

What teen therapy may include

Teen therapy at Level Up MHC commonly supports:

  • emotional reactivity, anger, and conflict at home
  • stress from friendships, dating, and social dynamics
  • family transitions, grief, or difficult life events
